St. Ben’s Retreat...to work is to pray

The St Benedict Workcamp Experience

The Saint Benedict Workcamp is a service retreat at Camp Koinonia. It is based on the Benedictine spiritual tradition - “to work is to pray”. No special skills are needed – just a willingness to help out. However, participants must be high school age or older.

By working to clean and repair Camp Koinonia, individuals have the opportunity to develop a close Koinonia community, and feel proud that the work they have done will help others enjoy the special spirituality of Camp Koinonia.

The Saint Benedict Workcamp begins with individuals being assigned to a small work team for their 4 day session. Teams have the opportunity to pick specific projects that need work done.

Each day begins with a hearty breakfast followed by morning prayer. All meals and prayer are community style. After morning prayer the fun begins! Each team begins work on their project they have chosen. A mid-morning break together offers everyone refreshments. Then it’s back to work until lunchtime when everyone gathers together to share what work your team accomplished and what experiences your team enjoyed. Lunch is always a treat at the St Benedict Workcamp. Afternoons are a perfect time for relaxing, swimming, napping, hiking, fishing, or ball games. During this time the Craft Lodge is a very popular spot and the Camp Store is often the hub of social activity. The evening meal is always an opportunity for good conversation as well as entertainment. Evenings include campfires, outdoor nighttime games, and Mass or evening prayer where everyone’s participation is encouraged.

Can't make the whole experience?

Even though St. Benedict Workcamp is a weeklong experience you can still join us if only for a day. We have plenty of one day jobs to do. We welcome you even if you can only join us for a few hours. At St. Benedict Workcamp we do everything as a community. So if you're planning on joining us for just a day we ask that you join with the community for prayer and meals. We also ask a monetary donation to help with our meal costs.
